As someone who runs your own food truck, you may work from what seems like dawn to beyond dusk every day just to keep your business running. Through it all, your goal continues to be finding recipes, marketing strategies, and novel approaches that appeal to your loyal customers and help to attract new ones. With all of this activity going on, you would be forgiven if you failed to consider Halloween to be a day you should put on your mobile eatery’s calendar. But before you ignore the significance of Oct. 31, take a minute to see how this season can boost your sales and brand recognition in many frightfully awesome ways.

1. Get in the spirit of the season.

Love it or hate it, one thing is certain about Halloween: People of all ages love to celebrate this harvest-based holiday. Although dressing in costumes is one way, participating in food festivals is another. This gives you the perfect opportunity to introduce your delicious edible offerings to a whole new group of hungry party-goers. Just be sure you have all your permits lined up so that you can move your truck right to the source of the action, and you could see benefits that last throughout the entire year.

2. Participate in trunk-or-treats.

These events have become popular in recent years, especially for families who live in rural areas or who don’t feel safe going from door to door in their neighborhoods. Bring your truck to one of these fun gatherings and offer your delicious foods to kids and adults as they collect candy throughout the location. And be sure to have plenty of business cards on hand that let people know where your truck is usually located.

3. Incorporate trick-or-treat into your marketing strategy.

Many of us might be all grown up, but we still remember how much fun we had prowling through the neighborhood on Halloween in search of as many sweets as possible. Help your customers relive this tradition by making up some small trick-or-treat bags of your own. You don’t need to spend a lot of money — just throw in a few pieces of candy. Of course, also be sure to include your business card and catering menu or even a branded refrigerator magnet or other merch. This will keep your food truck at the top of customers’ minds the next time they need to plan an event.

4. Make your menu reflect the season.

Let’s say you mainly sell sandwiches and drinks. You might be wondering what you could possibly do to spice up your menu to give it that Halloween vibe. Change your signage in a fun way so that your simple beef sandwich becomes a “BooBurger,” your potatoes are “Freaky Fries,” and your drinks are “Witches’ Brews.” This is just an example, but you get the idea.

5. Use social media to create a buzz.

You probably already use a food truck POS system to track inventory and store fun details about your customers. Equally important is that you have a dynamic presence on the social media sites your customers frequently use such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. (If you don’t, we can’t emphasize enough the benefits you will get from digitally engaging with current and future customers.) Now that fall is in the air and late October is approaching, get creative. Although you never want to lose sight of promoting the foods you sell, find ways to draw visitors in. You might have a Halloween food-based photo contest; or get people to share pictures of their favorite costumes. Encourage them to participate multiple times. This gets them to visit your page repeatedly so that you can tweak their appetites and interest in several ways as your page content changes.

6. Festoon your truck for the season.

Decking out your food truck in honor of Halloween is a fun and easy way to attract attention and bring people closer to see what you have to offer. While you’re having a chat with them about your cobwebs, witches, and pumpkin displays, you can also encourage them to try some of your tasty food selections.

7. Run a costume contest on the big day.

This is where social media can be your best friend. Advertise in advance and let people know that anyone dressed in costume who orders food at your truck on Oct. 31 will get a specified discount. Ask if it is okay for you to take a photo, and feature all of your bedecked diners on your social media page to highlight just how much fun you had on Halloween this year.

No longer does Oct. 31 need to be a day when everyone else has fun and makes money while you stay on the sidelines and watch. From now on, your food truck can be the talk of the neighborhood, serving up seasonal foods and giving customers old and new ways to celebrate and have fun.
